I need to get the contacts that have been recently active (in the last weeks 12 weeks). So basically I need to get the contacts in descending order by the Last activity date.
Is there any request I can use for this? I thought this is what the recently updated request does, but I figured out meanwhile that it's not. I also want to avoid going through all the contacts (as there are loads)

There isn't a way to filter contacts by their last activity date directly. What you could do if you have access to the Lists tool is create an active list of contacts whose 'Last activity date' property is within the timeframe you're interested in, and then request the contacts in that list:
