Large volume of 504 errors in the email event API

On a custom synch to the email event API on the BedrockData platform we are hitting delays due a the volume of 504 errors. We see from the logs that when these requests are retried they eventually succeed.

Here is an example of a request which first hit a 504 and then succeeded:
https://api.hubapi.com/email/public/v1/events?limit=1000&campaign=55667683&offset=Ch4KFQjvls2Lvt6Q55...

Any ideas as to what may be causing this?
