Stopping an API email - question


We have a number of single-send API emails in our portal. Back in 2016, we were told by a HubSpot support rep that once an API email is published and the email ID is used in an API call, the API can still send that email even if the email itself is later archived or unpublished. We were told the only way to truly stop it is to either stop the API call itself, or delete the email completely. I tried to ask HubSpot support about this today and they advised I ask the dev community here.

I'm just trying to find out if this is still the case. Can an API call truly send a HubSpot API email even if the email asset is unpublished?

I just tested this out in my own portal, and that does appear to be the case. I'm not entirely sure off the top of my head whether or not that's intentional behavior; let me touch base with my team to double check.
