Updated Contact and Properties were Deleted

I am testing updating contacts via the contacts API. While I was testing I shot over bad json and it appears in doing so it deleted all the associated custom properties. Why would it do this, how do I set a property field up to prevent this behavior. This seems like terrible system design and I'd like to understand why it was allowed to happen and how to prevent it.

Can you give me more information on what exactly happened? To dig into this further, I'll need:

1. Your Hub ID
2. The specific contact record you're referring to
3. The bad json request body you sent to HubSpot
